Islands
Kelvin: I am thinking perhaps Polynesian or south-east Asian in flavour. I’m not into the Mesoamericans. It’s all about pyramids and feathers with that lot.

Ben:
So far I am liking the idea of a collection of islands – due to a) limited size and b) they could be at the seafaring crossroads for different cultures, which could be reflected in a relatively cosmopolitan fantasy city design

  • I am thinking sub-tropical/ middle eastern in climate: jungles, badlands, mangrove swamps, desert
  • If we could define the dominant culture, and rival ones (eg the ones surrounding the isles/ influencing them), as well thus as the look/ feel of the urban morphology – these would be useful
  • How about having the island reflecting an Al Qadim like flavour. This was a favoured setting – yet has not been given any love/ attention. You could have Indian mythos influences (gods, foods, architecture) alongside Persian
  • Thus – the city state on the most fertile island could have some Caliph in charge.
  • The wealth of the isles would come from their mines – diamonds and platinum – and trade -which also gives them a good defence in the form of a powerful merchant fleet
  • The history of the isles – one of conquest and domination over time… with their independence one say over 25 years ago when a previous empire imploded… the resurgence of that empire could be something on the back burner.
  • There could be some ancient, cthulhuesque religions from the past – maybe even original peoples hiding in the jungles, worshipping their alien gods

Desert:
Stuart: I’m thinking of developing a desert region, fairly sparsely populated, perhaps once more fertile and home to an elder, non-human civilization, but now fairly arid, with just the odd settlement around an oasis (e.g. Sahara or Gobi desert). Quite a large expanse of territory, say about 1,500 miles east to west, and over 850 miles north to south. If we had a world map, I could drop it in somewhere there. Thinking of using it for the odd adventure but not epic campaigns.

Right now I’m just seeing a BIG desert, with the caliphates on the coast being trading ports and pirate havens for corsairs, and some oasis cities in the hinterland where water exists.

I’m also thinking about having serpent people in the desert region as an additional race, sort of like the yuan ti in D&D. They’re not hiding away in ruins, though, although they are treated very much as second class citizens in human cities and largely keep themselves to themselves. Probably worship Yig too, the blighters!

Oh yeah, there’s also a big area called the Lake of Glass where a meteorite struck, destroying the capital of the old serpent empire millenia ago.

Think I’ll call it the Desert of Wraiths. Will also develop Palashtar, one of the port cities, dominated by the mad half ogre corsair lord, Taram Shee (aka the Laughing Giant).

Cultures/ peoples
– cosmopolitan mix on the islands themselves?
– on the north edge of the desert are some arabic city states, who all would love to own the diamond mines of the islands.
– desert: nomadic traders?
– to the south of the desert are a mix of persian and arabic peoples?
– to the north, across the badlands, are horselords, ala the mongols?
– to the north and west – italian city states?
– city state of the overlord – despotic ruler. Lusts after the wealth of the isles.
– east – indo/chinese culture?
